Sherman Alexie rakes in another award for 'The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian'
Hollywood screenwriter, producer, poet, essayist and adult novelist Alexie Sherman hardly needed the awards and accolades. Still, his crossover debut into Young Adults fiction with the publication of The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian (Little, Brown Young Readers paperback; September, 2007), winner of the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the 2008 Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Excellence in Children's Literature among others, has added yet another award to his credit--the Washington Book Award (Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award) for middle grades and young adults, which was awarded on October, 22, 2008, in Seattle, Washington. With an introduction by bestselling children's author Eoin Colfer at the BookExpo America 2008 annual Children's Bookseller's Association breakfast, Sherman Alexie reflected on his remarkably successful crossover from adult to young adult fiction. Describing the poverty and terrifying loneliness of growing up on an Indian reservation and eating Government food, Alexie stressed the saving graces of books, which saved his life, and offered insight into the terrifying loneliness of being a young adult today as the reason he chose to write his award-winning book. Alexie closed his remarks with praise and thanks to booksellers, publishers, books, and readers for saving him and making the world a better place for young adults.
