Tomie dePaola celebrates 15 million copies in print
With an introduction by Academy Award winning British film star and bestselling children's book author Julie Andrews, Tomie dePaola made his second appearanceat BookExpo America, thirty-something years after his first when BEA was known as the ABA book industry convention. dePaola traced the arc of his career from his early days at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, where he studied art, singing and tap dancing, to the publication of his first book. dePaola recalled the circumstances for writing his breakout children's classic, Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs before introducing the latest in his long-running Strega Nona series, Strega Nona's Harvest (Putnam Juvenile; September, 2009), and wrapping his appearance with a heartfelt 'thank you' to booksellers and publishers for his 15 million copies in print.
